We had some family friends/neighbors in the real estate game; I was a "motivated seller" so the house had sold quickly. I went back to Uni for the Summer Session and subsequent quarters.
My grief and depression phase continued for about 9 months. While I wasn't celibate, I wasn't as active as I had been before my Moms died. But gradually increasing variety seemed to be helping my depression. The real revelation was yet to come.
My Bestie, my dependable friend since I was 10, was dumped by his girlfriend of 17 months while we were at sea making a yacht delivery when her prior boyfriend was released from prison. They were moving back to a town in the Appalachian Mountains. It was obvious that this was her plan for the four years her boyfriend was incarcerated. Needless to say Bestie was devastated and depressed. For a short time we became obsessed with commiserating and actually took advantage of the yacht owners offered hospitality and worked our way through a bottle of (Don Julio Real) tequila. That ended after my brain had a WTF moment of who cares clarity. I invalidated over nine years of platonic friendship when I jumped his bones. Three days later we got dressed.
Needless to say, he went from "safe guy" to "#1 friend with" after a nice, long talk and the setting of some limits. Nowadays he has joined my poly cluster as one of my paramours. I think we'll remain mutual Besties "til death do us part" (without all that paperwork, unless it becomes a big tax advantage).
