Tried that. Knoppix first, then tried Ubuntu Rescue Remix (wouldn't even boot on my hardware) and Dr. Freeware (booted on an old PC I had in the basement, but didn't help).
You perverts may be in luck though. Using SpinRite I was at least able to verify that some of the drive was readable. The drive failed in a really weird way, but I'm not doing a RAW copy to a second hard drive. I might know in about 100 hours if anything is readable.

GetDataBackNTFS found 30 files on the whole drive (out of 500 GB)
RecoverMyFiles didn't find anything.
EaseUS Data Recovery was similar to GetDataBack
Active Partition Recovery didn't work
OnTrack EasyRecovery seems to find the files, but it's not very useful. After two and a half days of running on the drive it "found" half a million files and 100 folders. But the progress bar only went up to 0.12%. At that rate it wouldn't finish for seven years...
If anyone has a tip for a tool I can use that'll be able to rebuild the filesystem on this drive (in less than seven years), I'd be happy to post more.
