In a fit of paranoia I painted over the camera in my computer. A friend of mine had hers hacked by a creep we were both talking to(who sent me hate messages later), and had compromising photos leaked and distributed. I never really used it anyway, but now it's covered in pink nail polish.

You mean "guessed my password" because birthdates are NOT reliable passwords contruary to popular belief. And with "popular" I mean "amateur".

Or just unplug the damn thing? In the case of a laptop where it is literally inside the case, just disable it from the options.
As for "hacked" you cant hack one like that. Its a myth. The most anyone can do it guess your password from whatever program you would use to send your cam stream through. Since you dont use it, no worries.
Find a geek who has a gf already to disable your cam or explain how it really works so you wont be fearing out of ignorance and do stupid things like painting over the camera.
When in doubt, turn the cam to a wall.
Myself, I use a program that lets me put up pics on my cam for others to see...so I just use a black screen to blank out the view when I dont want to be seen.
(or any silly pic like one that tells others to fuck off lol)
But as I said, if you dont have the program or site open, then the cam is off and not being looked at.
Paranoid reactions are NOT reasonable actions. Remember that.
