Female Circumcision is an emotive subject and also controversial, given the ever-increasing numbers of Western women who now pro-actively seek identical surgical procedures on their external genitals of their own volition. Once surrounded in medical confidentiality, until only recently many surgeons in the Western world provided clitoridectomy, clitoridotomy and labiaplasty - in various combinations, often referred to as either "female circumcision" or "genital reduction" - as on-demand, routine surgeries. Increasingly medicalized in countries where it has been traditionally practised, there is now a considerable backlash against perceived "cultural imperialism" of vocal and vociferous Western activists who are seen as forcing their own - often ill-informed - values on others. And then there is an element of religious prejudice attached to female circumcision as much as there is toward its male equivalent. There are growing numbers of women who now make their way to countries where female circumcision is not banned and can be circumcised without the law obstructing their right to self-determination over their bodies and enjoy the many transformative benefits of the procedure. Today, their surgeons are often women. There are growing numbers of men now prepared to admit that they prefer their partners circumcised. No one questions a woman's right to prefer her male partners to be circumcised. It is time to redress the balance. For many, female circumcision is viewed as desirable and as necessary as male circumcision. It is time to admit to the real equality between the sexes.
