Janet had walked her beloved Jack Russel Yoda in the woodland near enough every day for the past year it was only a five minute walk from her home and during the summer it was packed with people and families enjoying a day out even during the winter there was the usual mixture of other dog walkers and joggers but now with covid lockdown in full force the pathways through the park were deserted.

Yoda had done his usual thing running off chasing rabbits she could hear him barking somewhere up ahead in amongst the trees and carried on walking knowing he would eventually get bored and follow her. Janet loved being outdoors in the fresh air and it never crossed her mind she might be danger as she strolled along her customary pathway passing the old derelict building that was something left over from the days when the woodland belonged to a local landowner back in the seventh century before he fell on hard times and now belonged to the council.

Janet could smell wood burning it was a pleasant smell one that remaindered her of Christmas for some reason as she carried on eventually reaching the old building which was the turnoff point she normally took to take her and Yoda back home but he hadn’t caught up to her yet and she stood rubbing her hands together her breath bellowing out in the chilly air as she called for him to come. She waited a few minutes for him to appear before deciding to head back the way she came she was a little annoyed Yoda had chosen to continue chasing rabbits and she continued to call him as she trudged back towards where she had last seen him.

Janet smiled when she heard a rustling coming from the overgrowth and she hoped that Yoda hadn’t actual managed to catch a rabbit the thought of having to prize a dead rabbit from his mouth wasn’t a pleasant one as she called one more time but its wasn’t Yoda that emerged from the tree line but a disheveled looking man. Janet took a step back she still didn’t fathom the danger she was in as she asked him politely if he had seen her dog the man only replied with a shake of his head and a grunting sound which Janet thought was quite rude but thank him anyway turning away from him to carry on with her search. She only managed two steps before a strong arm wrapped around her neck her heels scrapping two furrows in the damp earth as he dragged her backwards her hands clinging to his arm in a futile effort to extricate herself from him grip as she was roughly manhandled back towards the old buildings.
